In original publisher wraps in which it would have been delivered to the purchaser's binder. Light blue wraps with a small woodcut illustration of a garden scene. Entire cover in very good condition on all sides despite the fact the wrapper is 200+ year old. Minor foxing within, first signature slightly loose but not in danger of releasing. Text in French. Housed in green cloth slipcase and chemise with burgundy leather title patch to spine.

Blue decorated cloth publisher's binding with gold and red embossed designs reproduced from the interior. Wear and scuffing to jacket although titling and decorations still sharp. Cloth has split along front hinge as well as along interior gutter of pastedown but still tight to text block. Losses at head and foot of spine. Top edge of text block is gilded, other edges deckled. Custom mylar dust jacket now protects the cover. Previous owner's name, "Orestes Pierce" stamped neatly at upper right corner of title page. Clean within, numrous illustrations by the author supplement the text.
