There are occasional traces of foxing within. Binding tight, text clean. This 1820 re-issue of the 1784 Bewick's Fables contains the exquisite wood blocks from the original. Very Good.

The results of the author's three summer tours of Brittany, in two of which the artist participated. "A series of sketches of a black-and-white country...a sombre land shrouded with white clouds, peopled with peasants in dark costumes, wide white collars and caps, black and white cattle, and magpies." Very Good.

Each part consists of loose page reproductions inside a stiff, chocolate brown, paper wrapper with a 3" x 4" pasted-on title label on the front cover. Each title label has a reproduction of a different character out of one of Dicken's tales. The whole is encased in a paper-over-boards folio with two tie closures. The covers of the folio are of dark gray paper over a brown cloth spine. The front cover has reproductions of three of Dickens' characters as well as a 3-3/4" x 5" pasted-on, illlustrated title label. The covers are somewhat aged, slightly soiled and edge-worn. The spine has been repaired at the top, but still has an approx. 1" long...
Chicago: P.F. Volland & Co. Paper Boards. First Edition. Unpaginated, 10 pp. Paper covered boards and pages are of same, parchment-like paper finely flecked with gilt. Front cover has black lettering and a hand-colored illustration of a basket full of grapes and grape vines. Covers and spine are ever so slightly aged, soiled and edge-worn. Left-hand pages are blank. Right-hand pages each contain a brief drinking toast. Title page, and every other page, has hand-colored grape and grape-vine motifs highlighted with gilt. Each of the five toasts begins with a decorative initial. Pages are stapled together, but there is also a silky, royal blue, ribbon tying them together at the center fold. Interior is as new. A lovely little Volland to add to your collection...

Warm brown calf cover elaborately stamped in gilt with decorative rules around a filigree-type frame around an ornate title block, with similar decoration repeated on spine and back cover. Leather is slightly scuffed at edges, but no real loss of integrity. Date in Roman numerals also stamped on front cover, and the title block includes artist's name. All edges gilt. Endpapers are a warm brown, a close match to cover color, patterened with gilt flecks. Front paste-down is the printed bookplate of noted Swedish artist Gustaf Tenggren (1896-1970). On the ffep, as on back cover of book, is a framed monogram of the initials of Dr...

The centaurs from the front cover reappear, in gray-on-gray, eps, foxed to varying degrees. The fanciful, tipped-in illustrations in vibrant colors are exquisite. Interior slightly aged, but clean, crisp and tight. Very Good.

Red/orange outline of playing kitten on front, with the same color in title on spine. Spine slightly faded, with wear at both ends. Less than 1/4" eroded from head of spine. Edges and covers are a little soiled over all, but not significant for a 100-year-old book. Previous owner's name in ink on first free endpaper. Inside is clean and bright, printed in dark green with dark green/white illustrations accented with yellow tones.

Contents are clean and tight, with a small dog-eared tear to final sheet, probably the result of careless opening.
Marcia Lane Foster's brilliantly colored illustrations are charming, adding to the whimsical appeal of this book. Very Good / very good.
