The text is set in 12pt Poliphilus printed on a dampened hand-made paper from the Carteria Amatruda in Amalfi, Italy. The end-papers are of burgundy-colored Magnani Firenze, hand-made in Italy. The book consists of a single section of 16pp sewn into boards. Filled with Kent's illustrations and reproductions of color paintings that supplement the text. A stunning work when it was published in 1955 in the United States. A wonderful address by Powell on the joys of books and libraries. Designed by his lifelong friend and collaborator Ward Ritchie and bawdily inscribed to Ritchie's companion, actress and fine press printer Gloria Stuart. Powell grew up with Ward Ritchie (fellow bookman and printer extraordinaire) in Southern California where the two of them were part of an intimate group in the late 1920s and early 1930s that included M.F.K. Fisher, Gloria Stuart and her first husband, sculptor Gordon Newell. Fine.
