In 1929 and 1930, well before Chandrasekhar, Edmund Stoner (1899-1968) calculated the the relationship between the mass, radius, and density of white dwarf stars, leading to his prediction that the maximum mass of a white dwarf (now called the "Chandrasekhar limit") would be approximately 1.1 solar masses, beyond which it would collapse further.
