An extremely important book, and Ian L. McHarg's (1920-2001) first, that set out a systematic approach to designing for communities that took the environment into consideration, working with the ecology of the area rather than forcing it to adapt to the built environment. McHarg was the founder of the department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Signed by McHarg on the half-title page in blue ink, dated separately underneath "9-4-81" in black ink. McHarg's signature is somewhat rare.
