French chemists Pierre Louis Dulong (1785–1838) and Louis Jacques Thénard (1777–1857) conducted experiments that led them to propose that catalysis is the result of contact between metals and a combustible substance with the reaction taking place at a different temperature for each combination. Dulong and Thénard published two papers on this topic, this being the second.
