Faraday makes an early step toward the discovery of the electron. In 1838, he passed an electrical current through a glass tube containing various gases, and noticed a strange “glow discharge” that occurred at both electrodes as he evacuated the tube. The glows extended from both electrodes for some distance as he increased the evacuation, but it never fully met at the middle.
