Brown leather with five raised bands at spine, burgundy patch title with gold lettering. Light age toning to interior. Previous owner's name in ink and dated 1777 on title page, second small ownership signature on third page with date 1902. Underlining in faded blue ink on pages 133, 178, & 179. Very clean overall. Two folding plates illustrating the apparatus used in the experiments, one tipped in opposite title page, second at end of Appendix at rear. Very Good.
The first volume in Priestley's three volume work on the study of gases. This volume expands upon his observations reported in Volume 62 (1772) of the "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London." Also contains Priestley's proposal to carbonate water, which eventually lead to the creation of the mineral water industry.
