Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) was the wife of English diplomat, Edward Wortley Montagu and during posting to Turkey took a keen interest in Turkish culture and is known chiefly today for her letters from Turkey and the life and society she described there. A wonderful set. xii, [4], 165, 167, 134, 142 pp. 16mo. Full leather boards expertly re-backed early in the set's life. Five raised bands at spine, dark brown patch titles, intricate geometric design in compartments without titling, front and rear boards have a lion sitting on its haunches embossed in gold, gold embossed board edges, marbled endpapers. An exceptional rebinding. Interiors clean and crisp. Earlier bookseller listing for the set tipped onto first free endpaper of Volume I. The 4th volume, "An Additional Volume to the Letters" published in 1767. Very Good.
