Lyle, Gisborne, Rose.
Henry Schultze/a Tale/ The Savoyard/ A French Republican's Store/With Other Poems.
London: C & J Ollier, 1821. Half Leather. First Edition. Three books bound as one in half leather over marbled boards. Covers set off w/stamped rules, red spine and corners. Spine has six raised bands, gilt, the names of three authors stamped. Cover is holding by one thread. Edges are tinted gilded red. Armorial bookplate on front paste-down with name of Rev. Roger Frampton St. Barbe. Inscribed on half-title of first book to this man "with the author's respects." First book included: title page reads: "Henry Schultze/a Tale/ The Savoyard/ A French Republican's Store/With other poems. London/ C & J Ollier/Vere Street/Bond Street/1821." This section is 143 pps. long, contains an "advertisement" which appears to be an author's preface. Four short poems follow the two titled. Second section is 130 pp. long. T.p. reads as follows: "Walks in a Forest:/ or,/Poems/Descriptive of scenery and incidents/characteristic of/A Forest,/at different seasons of the Year./ By Thomas Gisborne, M.A./ the Sixth Edition, Corrected/ (A Latin Quote) from Lowth, De Sacra Poesi Hebraeorum/ London:/Printed by A. Strahan, Printers-Street,/For T. Cadell and W. Davies in the Strand/ 1803." There are six engraved plates attributed to S. Gilpen. On p. 108 of this section, a printer's error is crossed out and written over it in tiny pencil lettering is the correct word (corrected fettered to fretted). The final book in this binding has this T.p.: "The/Court and Parliament/of/Beasts/freely translated from/the Animali Parlanti/of/Giambattista Casti/a poem/in seven cantosss./By William Stewart Rose./"Walk in, Ladies and Gentlemen!" Polito/passim./ London:/John Murray, Albemarle-Street./1819." This selection contains 119 pps. Throughout, there is almost no foxing and very little sign of age other than the precarious binding. Final two books each have an errata list. The first and last selections are extremely rare, with a few more copies found of "Walks in a Forest." Condition is amazing! Internally Very Good Plus.
