Red cloth cover is elaborately embellished with black and gilt frame, morning glory design, and title block. Beveled edges. All corners worn and bumped. Spine sunned, a little wear at extremities. Beginning to fray in back gutter. Cover soiled. Eps are a taupe/white vignette of illustrations, split at front hinge. Particularly clean and tight. St. Nicholas was a popular children's monthly for many years, containing fiction, poetry, "jingles," pictures, photo ills., continuing stories, riddles, word puzzles, reader submissions, and more. Many famous authors and artists appeared in the magazine. In this issue, four of Palmer Cox's popular illustrated "Brownies" verses; three installments of the James Otis story "Jenny's Boarding House"; gas wells; "How a Great Battle Panorama is Made" with photos & drawings; Louisa May Alcott's "The Blind Lark"; a pictorial feature on the old homesteads of Portsmouth, N.H.; and more dog stories.
