Abbot, Abiel, Rev.
LETTERS WRITTEN IN THE INTERIOR OF CUBA.
Boston: Bowles and Dearborn, 1829. Hardcover. First Edition. 256 pp. Subtitle: "Between the Mountains of Arcana to the East, and of Cusco to the West, in the Months of February, March, April, and May 1828." Marbled boards with one-quarter leather. Overall the book is tight and intact, and the interior is in remarkable condition for its age. The spine is worn and tattered at top; it has been repaired, but gilt title is still legible. There is some clear tape on the cover, and signs of tape having been removed. Corners bumped and frayed, edges worn. Library label on inside front cover, and owner's signature on ffep. Preliminaries and several pages at the end of the book foxed. Abbot was Pastor of the First Church in Beverly, Mass., when he died before the publication of this book. A Harvard graduate, he journeyed to Cuba seeking relief from a "pulmonary condition." His travelogue is a well-written and fascinating look at Cuba in the early 19th Century. His letters home also reflect his deep concern over the dissention in the church in America. Abbot died on his way home from this journey, at the age of 58. Very Good.
