Spine & edges a bit sunned. Aeg. White eps. Contents are clean, tight, and bright, w/ many engraved ills. Introductory author's note states, "The substance of this poem, under the name of The Witch's Daughter, was published some years ago in the volume entitled 'Home Ballads.' For reproducing it in its present form with some additions to its original text, the author hopes to find an excuse in the beauty of the illustrations which the change has suggested." This lovely reissue of BAL21932 contains 58 b/w engravings by A.V.S. Anthony. Near Fine.

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1867. Full Leather. First Edition. 12 pp. B/w engraved ills. .."Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: 'It might have been.' " Maybe the most famous line in this romantic poem, it's in a lovely copy of the book, a first of dated reproductions (BAL 22258). Textured brown leather is stamped with an elaborate scrolled border in black. Five raised bands on spine with black decorations in each compartment, gilt title. Touches of wear to spine extremities and corners, with some rubbing at all corners. Dentelles at edges and insides of eps. Red and blue marbled eps. Neat printed bookplate on front paste-down. There is a gift inscr. in pencil on first fly. All edges gilt. T.p. says 1867; copyrighted 1866. BAL states a first printing of 1000 copies on Oct. 8, 1866. Very Good.
