Walker, John.
A CRITICAL DICTIONARY AND EXPOSITOR OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
Philadelphia: Benjamin Warner and Thomas & William Bradford, 1818. Full Leather. Eleventh Edition Improved. 413 pp. Subtitle: "In which not only the meaning of every word is explained, and the sound of every syllable distinctly shown, but, where words are subject to different pronunciations, the reasons for each are duly considered, and the best pronunciation is selected to which is prefixed An Abstract of the Principles of English Pronunciation. And directions for acquiring a knowledge of the use of this dictionary." Age-softened leather covers are occasionally scuffed, worn threadbare at corners, with a little loss of substance at heel of spine and rubbing along hinges. Lower back hinge beginning to separate, but no loss of binding. Spine has gilt rules eroding a bit, and brown title block with "Walker's Dictionary" in gilt. The interior is foxed uniformly, easily readable, and tight. An appendix whixh follows the dictionary ends with "N." It is amazing to look at the copyright information on this book which begins "Be it remembered that on the second day of November in the thirty-third year of the Independence of the United States of America, A.D. 1808 ..." Very Good.
