Twain, Mark; (Clemens, Samuel).
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
New York: Charles L. Webster & Co. 1885. Hard Cover. First Edition. 366 pp. A lovely copy of the beloved American classic in a true first edition, first issue. Only lightest of edgewear to spine ends and corners. One elegant Spencerian script of the previous owner at upper first free endpaper is the only mark found. The first free endpaper has been re-hinged and the text block re-mulled to the cover board by our in-house bindery. At pp. 364-365 there is a darker ghosted strip where apparently a bookmark spent time. Final page has a crease and a minute repaired closed tear at fore-edge, rear gutter is starting with paper pastedown paper split, original mull intact and tight. Book meets all the criteria found in Merle Johnson's Bibliography of the Works of Mark Twain, Harper, New York & London, 1935. The list of definite features of any first state of Huckleberry Finn includes the Illustrations index on p.13; "Him and Another Man" is listed as at p.88; it appears on p. 87. On p. 57, line 23, the phrase "with the was" appears; should be as later corrected "with the saw." On page 58, line 29, the word "touched" and on p. 59, line 11, the word "would" have touches of broken type. On p. 161, where the signature # 11 should appear; it is missing. There are further examples, such as the presence of a cloth on the table where the Gerhardt bust of Twain was photographed, and others. This copy meets the criteria set forth by Johnson and in BAL 3414. The novel had no previous publication in periodical or magazine. Very Good.
