Cover has blue asterisk pattern on front, with gilt inkwell, pen point, and seal. Black & gilt lettering on spine. Corners have slightest touches of wear. Inscribed on ffep by editor. White glossy dj, unclipped, has a blue and gray design of inkwells; black lettering front and spine. Dj has small scattering of foxing on lower spine. Inside clean, bright, and tight. Contrabands, or freedman, were free blacks who found themselved in "dp" camps where they were ministered to by aid societies. The Chase sisters, Quakers from Massachusetts, went to Virginia in 1863 to serve. Their letters form the basis of this interesteng book. Near Fine / Very Good Plus.
