Sanborn, F.B. (Remarks by).
LETTERS.
Cloth and Paper Board. Inscribed. 10 pp., plus facsimile of a 4 pp. letter. Cream-colored paper boards over green cloth spine. Boards are aged, soiled and discolored. Bright gilt lettering on front cover. Spine is slightly creased and worn at ends. Corners are bumped. Brief ink inscription from Mr. Bixby on ffep. Text is on (presumably) hand-made paper with deckled edges. All pages are foxed. Text consists of a facsimile of a four-page letter from Maria White (the first Mrs. Russell Lowell) to Sophia (Mrs. Nathaniel) Hawthorne, with accompanying remarks by the noted editor and biographer, F.B. Sanborn. In addition, a reprint of a brief letter from William Black to Osgood, identified as "the Boston publisher and companion of Dickens in London." This letter is prefaced by Sanborn's remarks which conclude with, "Black's curses on the editors who changed his manuscript will be echoed by all authors, -- though sometimes the editor keeps the author out of a blunder or a scrape." Interesting remark from a man who was himself an author and an editor. Very Good.
