Nossig, Alfred.
Manru: An Opera in Three Acts. Music By I.J. Paderewski.
New York: G. Schirmer, 1901. Soft Cover. First Edition. First American Edition. 412 pp. "Translated and adapted for performance in English by H.E. Krehbiel." Beige wraps printed on front with title and design in red. Wraps and edges somewhat soiled, but basically unworn. T.p. printed in red and black with same design as front cover, signed "E.E." Lyrics offered in both German and English. Preliminaries in English, although the cast listed is the cast of the original Dresden performance. Scored for piano accompaniment. The entire book is clean, tight, and bright, as well as scarce. Because of its rarity and excellent condition it is an ideal candidate for a fine binding. Manru was Paderewski's first (and only) opera, the fulfillment of a long ambition. It opened in May 1901 in Dresden's Royal Theater. Maurice Grau, the manager of New York's Metropolitan Opera, staged Manru at the Met on February 14, 1902 with the orchestra under the direction of Walter Damrosch, and Marcellina Sembrich in the main role. Reviews were favorable, and the opera was also performed in Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Paderewski never wrote another opera, preoccupied by personal tragedies and rumblings of war in Europe. Very Good.
