OS LUSIADAS.
Avinhao: na Officina de Francisco Seguin, 1818. Leather. Two volumes bound as one: Vol. I, 202 pp., Vol. II, 270 pp., plus 2 pp. book ads. Subtitle, "Poema do Grande. Segundo o Legitimo Texto." Camoes' epic poem, in Portuguese, first published in 1572. Camoe died in 1580. Title translates as, "The Sons of Lusus" referring to the Portuguese people. Lusus was the mythical founder of Portugal. Camoe is so revered in Portugal that their National Day is celebrated as Camoe's Day, in his honor. Beautiful old tree calf binding with blind-stamped, bright gilt decorative fules and embellishments on spine. Tan calf title block, with faded gilt lettering, is pasted-on spine. Covers and spine are somewhat aged and edge-worn. Spine ends are worn and chipped. Upper edge of spine has broken off. Corners are bumped and frayed to the boards. Portions of cover edges are also worn to the boards. All edges marbled with complimentary marbled eps. Deteriorating bookplate on front paste-down. Rubber-stamped imprint on title page of "Tomo Primo." Interior is slightly aged and, occasionally, lightly foxed. Very Good.
