Aldrich, Thomas Bailey.
FRIAR JEROME'S BEAUTIFUL BOOK.
Boston & New York: Houghton Miffiln, 1896. Leather. 13 pp. Black/red decorated pages. One of the most interesting and unusual bindings we've seen, the embossed front cover shows Friar Jerome in clerical robes holding a book and holding up another book. The design is stamped on a darker brown than the tan leather covers. Same darker lettering on spine. Edges are a bit darker and a bit worn. Lower corners rubbed. Something has taken small nibbles at heel of spine, and there are two bookworm holes in front hinge and one in back hinge. The book has two silk ribbon ties attached in the bindings of front and back edges which fit through openings in d.j. flaps and then tie. The brown paper dj has the same image as book cover. It is chipped at edges and shows a diagonal line on back where it appears liquid was spilled. All eps are shadowed from the dj flaps. A full-color illus. of Christ and angels is laid in at t.p. The body of the book is an amazing design in arts & crafts style, printed on unopened leaves ruled in black with red lines under the printing of each line. Decorative caps in red. The first page of the text shows a double-page spread of black and white figured binding. The left leaf has a drawing in red of Friar Jerome at work writing. Text block actually starts with a very large decorative cap in red. Likewise, at the end of the poem, the figured border appears again. There is a "footnote" in a different typeface in red. The very last page reads in red "Finis," elaborately styled and decorated all in red. A lovely example of its genre with only a hint of age to its text block. Very Good / Very Good.
